Mary Korytkowski, MD

Dr. Korytkowski is a professor of medicine in the Division of Endocrinology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. She received her BS in Nursing from D’Youville College in Buffalo, NY; a Masters in Nursing from Emory University in Atlanta, GA; and her MD from UNC Chapel Hill. She completed residency training in internal medicine at Baltimore City Hospital and fellowship training in Endocrinology and Metabolism at Johns Hopkins Hospital and Sinai Hospital in Baltimore. She joined the faculty at the University of Pittsburgh in 1989 where she has served as Assistant Director (1989-1992) and Director (1992-1995) of the Pittsburgh Diabetes Center, then Medical Director of the Center for Diabetes and Endocrinology (1995-2006) at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC).

She served as Director of Quality Improvement for the Division of Endocrinology where she oversaw the introduction of standardized protocols and guidelines to improve the safety and quality of care provided to hospitalized patients with diabetes. She served as Chair of the UPMC Diabetes Patient Safety Committee from 2001-2018 and as interim Chief of the Division of Endocrinology (2012-2016). She is a member of the Endocrinology Fellowship Curriculum Committee, School of Medicine Admissions Committee, and co-directs the Endocrine Disorders Course for second year medical students.

Her research interests include interventions that promote glycemic and metabolic control in individuals with or at risk for diabetes; and inpatient glycemic management. She has participated in several large diabetes clinical trials, including the Bypass Angioplasty Revascularization Investigation in type 2 diabetes (BARI 2D), the Look AHEAD Study, and the Diabetes Sleep Treatment Trial.

Dr. Korytkowski served as a member of the Professional Practice Committee, the Board of Directors, and the Research Grant Review Committee for the American Diabetes Association and the Clinical Guidelines Committee for the Endocrine Society. She currently chairs the writing group for the Endocrine Society Clinical Guideline for Inpatient Glycemic Management in Non-Critical illness. She served on the editorial board for the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism (2014-2018) and is a current member of the ABIM Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism Board Exam Committee (2014-2020).

Dr. Korytkowski has authored over 100 peer reviewed manuscripts, invited commentaries, reviews and book chapters.
