John Melish, MD
University of Hawaii, Honolulu, Hawaii
Undergraduate education was at Harvard. After the Yale School of Medicine, I completed internship and residency in Internal Medicine at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, New York. Fellowship training in Endocrinology and Metabolism followed under the direction of Dr. Christine Waterhouse at Strong Memorial where I studied lipoprotein electrophoresis.
I recently retired as Professor of Medicine at the John A. Burns School of Medicine after joining the faculty in 1971. After spending 3 years at the Lipid Research Clinics at the UCSD School of Medicine, I returned to join the medical school faculty here in Hawaii in 1977. Even as a full-time teacher, I continued a regular practice of Endocrinology and Metabolism, with a special interest in diabetes and pregnancy. Current interest is further understanding Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) and its quantitation beyond the summary formats used in diabetes patient care. I continue teaching clinical skills at JABSOM.
