San Francisco, California

Suneil Koliwad is faculty member in the Diabetes Center and Department of Medicine at The University of California San Francisco, and holds The Gerold Grodsky, PhD/JAB Chair in Diabetes Research. His work focuses on the links between nutrient excess, inflammation in insulin-sensitive tissues, and the development diabetes type 2. This focus has led him to make key discoveries regarding the biology of inflammation in tissues such as the fat, liver, and brain that play important roles in normal health and in the pathogenesis of obesity and its consequences.

More recently, Dr. Koliwad's group has developed a cohort of lean and obese individuals who have undergone intensive biological characterization. This cohort, called the Inflammation, Diabetes, Ethnicity, and Obesity (IDEO) cohort is providing important data on ethnicity-specific drivers of metabolic disease in people.

Clinically, Dr. Koliwad attends in the Diabetes Clinic at the Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital, where he teaches students, residents, nurses, and fellows how to care for challenging and underserved patients with diabetes. He regularly speaks and consults on the use of mobile and electronic technologies to prevent diabetes and control body weight. An expert in this area, he helps write the nutrition and prevention sections of the American Diabetes Association's annual Standards of Care.
