Jonathan Schmitz, MD, PhD

A Clinical Microbiologist by training, Jonathan Schmitz serves as the Medical Director of the Molecular Infectious Diseases Laboratory at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, as well an as Assistant Professor in the Department of Pathology, Microbiology, and Immunology, where he leads a research group studying microbial pathogenesis. Dr. Schmitz earned his Bachelor’s degree from Princeton University and a Master’s degree from Cambridge University as a Churchill Scholar. He attended the Tri-Institutional MD PhD Program, where he received his PhD from The Rockefeller University and MD from Cornell University. Following Clinical Microbiology Fellowship training at Vanderbilt, he as stayed on as faculty, where his academic interests include opportunistic microbial pathogenesis and incorporating strain-to-strain microbial diversity into the paradigm of personalized medicine. Most recently, his efforts have focused on development and implementation of COVID-19 diagnostic testing for the Vanderbilt Health System, while pursuing diagnostic research on the virus and leading institutional COVID-19 bio-banking.
